1. Children's privacy (start here)
MathZeal is designed for children as young as 5, so children's privacy comes first. Children under 12 cannot create their own account — a parent or legal guardian registers and creates the child's profile, giving verifiable consent in the process (we confirm it via the parent's verified email, a method known as "email-plus" under the U.S. COPPA Rule).
For a child's profile we collect only:
- First name or display name — so we can cheer them on;
- Birth year — to set an age-appropriate difficulty level;
- Quiz performance — answers, speed, scores and streaks, to run daily practice and show the parent progress reports.
We never collect a child's email address, last name, photos, location, or contacts. We never show advertising to children, never sell children's data, and never share it with third parties for their own purposes.
Circles are a separate choice.If a child asks to join a circle (a small leaderboard with family or friends), we ask the parent separately before the child's display name and aggregate quiz stats become visible to that circle's members. A parent can undo this at any time by removing the child from the circle.
Parents' rights:from the family dashboard you can review your child's information, delete their profile and all associated data permanently, and withdraw consent (which deletes the profile). You can also email us at support@mathzeal.com for any of these.
2. What we collect from adults and teens (12+)
Account holders provide a name, email address, password, and birth year. We also store their quiz performance, streaks, and circle memberships. Adults added to a family by a parent must approve the link before the parent can see their activity.
3. How we use information
To run the service: generating age-appropriate quizzes, tracking streaks and scores, showing progress reports to the right people, and operating circles. Difficulty adjusts automatically based on recent quiz results (for example, questions get one level easier after two unsuccessful attempts). We do not use personal information for advertising or profiling beyond this.
4. When information is visible to others
- Family: parents see the progress of children in their family (and of linked adults who approved it).
- Circles: members of a circle see each other's display name, accuracy, and average speed — aggregates only, never individual answers. Children appear only with parental consent.
- Service providers: we use Supabase (database & authentication), Vercel (hosting), and Resend (transactional email) to operate MathZeal, under agreements that limit them to processing on our behalf.
- Legal: we may disclose information if required by law.
5. Data retention
- Child profile data: deleted 24 months after the profile's last activity, or immediately on parent request. We email the parent before inactive deletion.
- Adult accounts: deleted 36 months after last activity, with warning email.
- Consent records: kept 5 years after revocation as proof of compliance — these contain no child data beyond a first name.
- Backups: purged within 35 days of a deletion.
6. Security
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is enforced with row-level security in our database, so family data is technically isolated per family. We maintain a written information-security program for children's data and review it annually.
7. Your rights
United States:parents have COPPA rights to review, delete, and refuse further collection of a child's information. Depending on your state you may have additional access/deletion rights — email us and we'll honor them. You can complain to the FTC at ftc.gov.
Canada:under PIPEDA you may access and correct your personal information and withdraw consent. Quebec residents have additional rights under Law 25, including data portability. Our data is processed in the United States. You can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or in Quebec, the Commission d'accès à l'information.
8. Changes & contact
If we materially change how we handle children's data, we will notify parents by email and obtain new consent where required. Questions, requests, or complaints: support@mathzeal.com.
